THE GERSHMAN/RED ROCK AUDIO SUITE: SUPERNATURAL NATURALISM SPOKEN HERE
Sometimes great gear flashes its greatness like a rapper showing off the latest bling, and I suppose that’s okay. But to tell the truth, I much prefer Gershman and Red Rock Audio’s approach, which is to build components so disarmingly natural-sounding that—within seconds— listeners forget about being finicky audiophiles and just lose themselves in the music. On demonstration were Gershman’s gorgeous two-piece flagship Black Swan speakers powered by Red Rock Audio’s equally lovely Renaissance monoblock tube amplifiers (they were so visually appealing I almost didn’t care if they sounded good, though in fact they were superb).
I set out to listen to “a few minutes” of Hilary Hahn’s performance of the Edgar Meyer Violin Concerto, but wound up listening to the better part of an entire movement. I just couldn’t resist, and the reason why was that I found myself enthralled by one previously unnoticed aspect of the music after another. To a rare degree, these components graciously step out of the limelight to let the music take centerstage. And isn’t that precisely how high-end systems should work?

The Black Swan loudspeaker from Canadian manufacturer Gershman Acoustics is unusual in that it uses a separate enclosure for its woofer section, flanked by extensions of the satellite's side-panels. The speaker's finish was excellent and the sound, with the speakers driven by McCormack universal player and electronics via Magnan cable, was equally excellent, even taking the the small size of the hotel room into consideration.

My favorite Gershman Acoustics Avant Garde model played with Magnum Dynalab electronics for a celebration of quality Canadian audio design. (6 Moons Magazine GREECE Audio Show)

Gershman Acoustics.
Black Swan (42,000$).
(CES Las Vegas Report D-town Magazine, Israel)

This was my favorite room for listening to classical music. There's definitely a magical synergy with the Lamm electronics driving Gershman Acoustics speakers. Present were the power, the weight and the airy sounds of symphony hall being recreated in this room. This was room captivated my imagination as I sat for a good while, enjoying the music. Music was presented via the Gershman Acoustics Black Swan speakers ($36,000) being driven by the Lamm M1.2 Reference ($21,690), ML1.1 ($22,890) amplifiers, with Lamm L2 Reference preamplifier ($14,790) and Lamm LP2 phono preamplifier ($6,990). Digital source was provided by a NeoDio (from France) NR Two Transport (5,800 euros) and NR Two DAC (5,800 euros). Vinyl was played on a Clearaudio Anniversary turntable with a Graham 2.2 tonearm. Kubala-Sosna cables were used throughout. Equipment stand and isolation bases were provided by Critical Mass.

Gershman Acoustics

Gershman's Sonogram
Posted— By John Atkinson
One of Gershman Acoustics's dem rooms was next door to my hotel room. I was well aware, therefore, the night before the Show opened, of the pains the Canadian speaker company was taking to get the best sound from their affordable Sonogram loudspeakers (CDN$3695/pair). The result, using a system based on Audio Research CD3 Mk.2 player, LS26 preamplifier, and Reference 110 power amplifier, and Gershman's own cables was impressive.
The Sonogram combines a Peerless soft-dome tweeter with a Morel 2" dome midrange unit and and 8", American-sourced woofer that had been designed by Eli Gershman. The apparently conventional cabinet actually has a triangular-section inset running the height of the rear panel to break up internal standing waves.

Among all the speakers I heard at the show (I usually spend 18-24 months researching speakers before I buy as I like to keep them for the long haul--and I'm at the earliest phase of shopping for a pair for a 2 channel rig), these were in the top 5 regardless of price. Obviously not as good as their Black Swan brethren one room up, they were still very, very impressive. If I win the lotto between now and 2010, the Black Swans will be in my living room (I found them the most impressive of all among the ones I heard) but if the lotto is not in the cards, these will be on my short list.
